One of CFRA’s principle objectives is to promote the use of Limited Combustible (LC) cable as a replacement for or alternative to combustible Exception cable.

Limited Combustible (LC) cable is a new, safer class of plenum cable that is less likely to ignite, provides improved fire protection, is significantly less expensive than other fire safety options. In many jurisdictions, the use of Limited Combustible (LC) cable in walls, floors and ceilings does not require the installation of sprinklers and therefore, is an important cost-saving alternative to sprinkling concealed spaces.

During the past decade, the sharp increase in the use of combustible Exception cable -- much of which is unused surplus from replaced computers and communication systems
-- has increased the risk that fires may ignite and spread. It also has made the jobs of fire fighters and first responders more difficult and dangerous.

CFRA works with local governments, the National Fire Protection Association* and other organizations to establish codes that recognize the unique value of Limited Combustible (LC) cable in plenum spaces as a means of reducing the risk of fires in commercial buildings.
